Well I got up yesterday and got ready to head into work to watch some video things. I found that I couldn't do that till the afternoon so I headed back home. All of this took about a half an hour.
Now this is about Teaka so let me tell you that Teaka is my 2 lb long hair chihuahua. She is the love of my life and my little traveling companion not to mention ever since I got her she has been with me non stop. She would even go to work with me when I was living in Texas. I was lucky enough to have a job that allowed that. Teaka is my best little buddy. Teaka was accidently bred by another one of my Chihuahua's but as far as I knew it was only one time and I immediately started keeping them seperated. I started calling around where I lived in Texas to see about the chances of her being pregnant, what about a shot to keep her from being pregnant and so forth. They said the shot is very hard on them and she would have to be hospitalized for several days and they said something about spaying her. So I started asking how much to do that. Well I called several clinics and the cheapest was $300 and the rest were around $400. Now come on, she is 2 lbs, not like she is an elefant. So I decided I would wait till I got back to Missouri and check and well it didn't appear after some time that she was pregnant anyway. About a week after I got back to Missouri she started really getting plump. Which was odd because if she was pregnant she was due to whelp in about 2 to 2 and a half weeks so I would have thought that she would have shown sooner. Well in the last two weeks she started growing like crazy and I started feeling the baby or babies move. I thought there were two of them. Since I have a vet I have used for years here in Missouri I decided to wait and see and just keep a very close eye on her for any problems with delivery. WELL GUESS WHAT???
I get home from town yesterday morning only to find that her water bubble is sticking out and she is having contractions. Her water broke about 10 a.m. and she was contracting for a little while but then it stopped. It did not appear to be progressing. I waited till 11:30 a.m. and still nothing so I called my vet. They said yes bring her in so we can give her a shot to start things back up so I loaded her up and off we went. They gave her a shot and contractions started again. Upon being checked we didn't think there was any progression so they gave her a second shot. Labor continues and upon being checked at 1:00 p.m. still no progress. At this point it is the 3 hour mark which is usually the cut off time for waiting. We make the decision to go ahead with surgery to deliver the pup/pups and spay her. I was not going to risk losing her and I didn't want to put her through this again. I asked if I could stay, they said absolutely and I asked if I could assist in surgery and they said yes, which wasn't the answer that I was expecting but they knew I had grown up in the veterinary field and knew that I was experienced in the field. So I carry her into the surgery room and I put the little mask over her nose to sedate her then one of the techs inti bated her and I helped get her ready.
Surgery begins and the doctor has to enlarge the incision because the pup is to big to get it out. It turns out there is only one puppy and Teaka would have never been able to deliver it herself. The puppy is still encased in its sack and so there is a great chance its alive and ok. In the meantime Teaka's vitals are doing great on the monitors. She also had some puppy teeth that never came out so while she was under they pulled those. We get the pup out of its sack, clamp off the cord and tie it off and I am massaging the pup to stimulate it. Its a little girl, it is sable colored and very cute.
We get the puppy up and going and its nice and pink and doing great. I wrap it in a towel till Teaka is done with surgery. While she is waking up from surgery I go into town to take care of work stuff and come back and she is awake but not wanting anything to do with her baby. We all talked about the fact that it could be because she is still dopey from surgery because she will let the baby nurse. Its agreed that we watch closely to see if she will come around.
Well by last night she was cleaning the baby, feeding the baby and being very protective of her new daughter. She would have had a better chance of being able to give birth on her own if there had been more than one puppy. The one puppy got all of the nutrients and therefore grew bigger than if there had been two or three of them. Either way, she won't be having anymore. She will just be my little companion and sweet little girl that will have many many years ahead of her. She is on antibiotics right now as a precaution because of surgery but is eating again and doing fabulous. She is eating like a pig again, drinking a lot and the puppy seems to be getting everything she needs. I have them next to my bed where I can watch them throughout the night.
I am so thankful that my little girl is ok and taking care of her baby.
Today I start my job and now I can go without worrying if she is going into labor or not without me being there.
Life is good and our little Christmas present is just precious.
